Bitumen Manufacturing Process

Bitumen is a dark, highly viscous, and waterproof petroleum product produced during the crude oil refining process. It is widely used in road construction, waterproofing systems, roofing materials, industrial coatings, and numerous civil engineering applications due to its excellent adhesive and waterproofing properties.

How Bitumen is Manufactured

The manufacturing of bitumen begins with the refining of crude oil. After lighter petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and lubricating oils are separated through atmospheric and vacuum distillation, the remaining heavy residue becomes the base material for bitumen production.

1. Crude Oil Selection

The quality of bitumen depends significantly on the type of crude oil used. Heavy crude oils generally produce higher-quality paving-grade bitumen because they contain a greater proportion of high molecular weight hydrocarbons.

2. Atmospheric Distillation

Crude oil is heated to approximately 350–370°C and fed into an atmospheric distillation column. During this stage:

  • LPG is separated.
  • Naphtha is recovered.
  • Kerosene is extracted.
  • Diesel is produced.
  • Heavy gas oil remains.

The bottom residue from this column is known as atmospheric residue.

3. Vacuum Distillation

The atmospheric residue is transferred to a vacuum distillation unit, where pressure is reduced to prevent thermal cracking at high temperatures.

Under vacuum conditions:

  • Vacuum gas oil is separated.
  • Lubricating oil feedstocks are recovered.
  • The remaining heavy residue becomes vacuum residue, which serves as the primary feedstock for bitumen.

4. Bitumen Production

Depending on the required grade, the vacuum residue may undergo additional processing such as:

  • Air blowing (oxidation)
  • Blending with other refinery streams
  • Fluxing with suitable oils
  • Polymer modification

These processes adjust important properties including:

  • Penetration
  • Softening point
  • Viscosity
  • Elasticity
  • Temperature susceptibility
